Herts 1961 SFL Division 3 - Kimpton Rovers 4-2 Full House United

Kimpton Rovers made it three wins out of three for the season so far with a convincing victory over fellow new club Full House.

In what was one of the best games of football seen at the Recreation Ground for many years the home side totally dominated the first half scoring three times in fourteen minutes, Harry Byron opening the scoring with a close range header following a cleverly worked corner from Ed Purple and Dlawar Rekar. Eight minutes later Rekar got himself on the scoresheet with a smart finish and despite conceding just two minutes later Rovers extended their lead when captain Tom Hills replicated Byron’s earlier finish with a neat far post header from close range. Unfortunately, the hosts were unable to take the two goal advantage into the break conceding a second long range effort less than a minute after Hills’s goal.

Following the restart the visitors took more of a foot hold in the game creating some chances, but the latest centre-back pairing of newcomer to the club Jon Batt and Drew Hunter they were always in the right place at the right time to prevent Full House levelling the game. At the same time Kimpton continued to create good goalscoring opportunities and but for a slight lack of composure, some strange decision making when facing goal , along with several stunning saves from the visiting keeper the score could easily have been doubled, if not trebled. As the half progressed it was tense stuff with just the solitary goal separating the sides, before unlikely hero, right full back Lewis Rutter found himself on a rampaging run through the middle of the visitors half and finished with aplomb, leaving the visitors too big a deficit to surpass and the points were secured for the Rovers. Left full back Justin Zwirner continues to grow into that role providing a top quality ‘out-ball’ on a dozen or more occasions while goalscoring machine Marcus Dilley was unlucky not to continue his “goal per game” ratio firing wide with his best chance after coming off the bench at the break.

The thoroughly deserved Meyer Office Solutions Player of the Match went to John Batt for yet another rock solid performance.

Rovers finally move away from their home for the last three weeks with a trio of away fixtures including two cup ties, starting next week when they travel to London Colney for an Intermediate Cup tie against Phoenix Reserves.
